Turned Upside Down: The Shift from Acute to Chronic

The author describes the life-altering moment when a diagnosis shifts from acute to chronic, threatening their career as a company officer and turning their world upside down. While Iron Bison Resilience was originally established for those already living with chronic conditions, the author plans to evolve the mission to support patients immediately upon receiving their diagnosis. This proactive approach aims to help individuals "build their forge" early, preventing self-destructive behaviors before patients begin to define themselves solely by their pain.

The Moment of Impact The diagnosis of chronic pain, or a chronic injury, has the power to turn a life upside down. There is a distinct, heavy realization when a condition shifts from acute—something temporary to be fixed—to chronic. It is the realization that this pain is going to be with you for the rest of your life.

I can clearly recall the specific appointment when my doctor explained to me why the pain wasn’t going anywhere. At the time, the sensation was constant and distracting. I had no idea how I was going to "control" the pain spikes or manage the mental focus that crumbled along with them. The physical toll was immense; simple things, like the feeling of a cold wind or the act of brushing my teeth, seemed like too much to imagine enduring forever. It felt as if it would only get worse.

The Professional Crisis. Beyond the physical pain, my world was turned upside down professionally. I had years of a career ahead of me, but my ENT suggested it was time to consider "what's next" (by way of disclosure, I suffer from a vestibular disorder related to the same illness).

This advice was devastating because I was still a company officer operating in the field. There was no desk job to return to. The prospect of forced retirement and leaving the field made the situation feel insurmountable.

The Evolution of Iron Bison Resilience. My experience is not unique. Lately, I have been thinking deeply about how to address that pivotal moment when a patient first learns their condition is permanent.

Admittedly, Iron Bison Resilience was originally built for the chronic patient who already understands their condition and is looking for a way forward. However, we must do better at the beginning of the journey. The next step in the evolution of Iron Bison Resilience will be to address the point of diagnosis.

Building the Forge Early. The goal is to help patients start "building their forge" immediately. We want to teach them to use the necessary tools before they fall into the common traps associated with chronic pain: sinking into the recliner, diving into the bottle, and while they are still talking about their diagnosis.

We must intervene before they begin to define themselves solely by their pain or injury. Iron Bison Resilience will continue to adapt to meet this challenge.
